Phytonutrients Protect Both
Plants And Humans Alike.

Phytonutrients: Good For The Plant And Good For Us.

There is no doubt about it… a diet rich in fresh whole plants is absolutely essential to human health. Not everything is known concerning why plant nutrition is so essential to good health. But it is undisputed that part of the reason is the presence of plant chemicals known as phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients (or phytochemicals as they are also called) are nonnutritive plant chemicals that contain protective, disease-preventing compounds. More than 900 different phytochemicals have been identified as components of food, and many more continue to be discovered today. It is estimated that there may be more than 100 different phytochemicals in just one serving of vegetables.

The different types of these plant chemicals vary from one plant species to another. And their concentration can vary dramatically from one plant to another due to differences in soil conditions and other environmental factors. But one thing is certain; generally speaking phytonutrients compose a health tonic for the body.

Phytonutrients were designed to protect the plants from disease. As we consume the plant material we benefit from the protective qualities of these chemicals. To date they have been associated with the prevention or treatment of at least four of the leading causes of death among humans in the United States. These are…

  • cardiovascular disease
  • cancer
  • diabetes
  • hypertension.
The research is impressive and will continue to expand. Phytonutrients will become increasingly important to the health industry. That is one reason why it is essential to supplement with products that are derived from whole plant sources.
